I woke up one morning and she was gone. I checked the bathroom cabinet, the kitchen for her favorite coffee mug, the bedroom for her clothes. There was nothing left. As this sinking feeling was hitting me, I spotted her coffee cup sitting on a piece of paper, words scratched out underneath. There were coffee stains and scribbles, but the worst part was she had only written four words

Art can’t save the world on its own, no.Neither can soup kitchens. You don’t just need volunteers, you need food. You don’t just need food, you need donations. You don’t just need donations, you need a steady stream of donations. What about places without accesses to these? What if we run out of food? Then whoever made this sign must be the same people who support the “top 10 useless college majors”.Art will not save the world on its own. But it makes the world worth saving.It can inspire masses to move towards that soup kitchen, not out of anger or pity but out of compassion.Something that this sign, and those with similar mindsets, are obviously lacking.

You don’t inspire someone to action by calling them a “pretentious fuck”. You do it by appealing to their emotions and giving them direction. Hope and compassion are the greatest motivators.Anger and contempt are not.
